What Are Dental Implants?

Dental implants is the modern way to securely replace missing teeth. There are two main parts that make up the treatment:

  • Implant – these are placed within the jaw bone and effectively act as the new root of the tooth
  • Restoration – these are fitted onto the implants and will act as your new teeth. The restoration used will depend on your own situation e.g. crown, bridge, denture

Why Are Dental Implants Secure?

To put it simply, the implants are placed within the jaw bone. This differs from traditional methods such as dentures, as these are made to use suction forces on the gum ridges to keep them in place. The implant will fuse with the surrounding bone which will create a nice solid foundation to hold your new teeth in place. They are the closest thing we can get to natural teeth.

Should I Get Dental Implants?

Everyone is different and it really depends on what you are trying to achieve. We see a lot of denture wearers decide to go ahead with implants to help keep their teeth in place. Modern dentures have come on in leaps and bounds over the years, but one of the main issues is the changes that occur in our mouths when we have no teeth (bone resorption). These changes (bone loss) causes the once well fitting dentures to start to not be as comfortable and fit as well as they once did. Implants actually does the opposite, by fusing with the bone it does promote healthy bone growth and helps to stabilise the region, causing a more secure and permanent solution.
