What Is A Dental Check Up?

Dental check ups, also known as routine examinations form a fundamental basis for your overall dental care. Dental complications can progress if issues are left to develop. When you start to suffer with pain or sensitivity it is not always the first sign you are having a problem. Pain is often an indication that the problem you have has progressed, which will require further treatment to correct. So during your check ups we can see warning signs and address issues sooner rather than later.

A good way to think of a check up is to look at it like a service for your car. Just like a car service, we have a number of checks we need to go through to check the health of your mouth, teeth and gums. The main aim of the check up is to ensure your dental health is good and to identify if there is any treatment required to achieve dental health again e.g. any holes in your teeth (cavities), signs for gum disease etc, signs of oral cancer.

What Do We Check During A Check Up?

• Teeth
  • To see if plaque or tartar is forming on your teeth (they lead to cavities)
  • Checking for any holes in your teeth (cavities)
• Gums
  • Checking how deep the spaces between your gums and teeth are (this is to spot signs for gum disease)
• Tongue, throat, head & nose
  • Looking for any sigs of trouble, such as, swelling/redness and potential signs of cancer
• An x-ray may be required for further investigation

What Questions To Expect

• We will ask about your general health and if you have had any problems with your teeth since we last saw you
• Lifestyle habits such as your diet and if you smoke and drink alcohol. We will advise on best practices to help you improve your oral health while at home
