What Is Gum Disease?

Gum disease also called periodontitis (periodontal disease), is a bacterial growth in your mouth that can lead to tooth loss if left untreated.

One of the early warning signs for gum disease is an inflammation around the gums (gingivitis). It’s worth noting that not everyone who suffers with inflammation will have gum disease develop, but it is still worth getting your mouth checked out sooner rather than later (for advice).

One of the best ways to combat this from happening is by practicing a good oral hygiene routine and visiting you dentist regularly for a check up.

Signs & Symptoms of Gum Disease

  • Bleeding gums (can be more noticeable when brushing your teeth*)
  • Red, swollen/tender/irritated gums
  • A bad taste in your mouth
  • Halitosis (bad breath)
  • Gaps (pockets) between the teeth and gums
  • Mobile (loose) teeth
  • Gum line receding
  • The way the teeth meet together has changed (bite)

*When brushing or flossing your teeth, if you do notice any blood, please do not stop – it can be alarming, but the best fight against gum disease developing is by having good oral hygiene. By stopping, it will make the condition worse as bacteria will continue to grow.

What Happens If I Don’t Have Treatment?

Gum disease gets progressively worse if left alone. It will develop into advanced periodontitis which is when the bone/tissue around your teeth starts to fall apart. This is very bad because you will notice your teeth start to become mobile and tooth loss is a likely outcome. The sooner we can treat you and get this under control the better. Please do not hesitate to call us today.

Can Gum Disease Be Treated?

Yes it can, but it’s important that the condition is picked up sooner so we can achieve dental health again. Gum disease can lead to irreversible damage in the later stages so the overall treatments to achieve your goals can be more complex.

Unfortunately it’s not as straight forward as other treatments but our team are on hand to guide you along every step of the journey. Please call us today or use the short form below and we will be happy to help.
